Anti-racists mobilise as pro-Trump supporters plan to join “Free Tommy Robinson” rally – Saturday 14 July

On Saturday 14 July, in the wake of mass protests against Donald Trump’s UK visit, anti-racists will be opposing a far right ‘free Tommy Robinson’ protest in Whitehall, Central London.

The far right event was initially a pro-Trump protest and Trump supporters are planning to march to join the “free Tommy Robinson” rally.

Paul Gosar, a hard right Republican member of the US Congress, is also set to speak in defence of Robinson in Whitehall.

The rally is in support of the imprisoned ex leader of the English Defence League, and follows a previous Whitehall rally on 9 June.

At that event on 9 June police officers were attacked, anti-racists assaulted and Robinson supporters were filmed giving the Hitler salute. This was a violent, racist demonstration where the Muslim Community was targeted by speaker after speaker.

The racist right in Britain including known Nazi activists alongside UKIP’s leader Gerard Batten were joined by international supporters such as the Islamophobic politician Geert Wilders.

The far rights links to Donald Trump’s administration were hi-lighted at the rally by a personal message of support for Robinson sent by former White House Chief of staff Steve Bannon.

A statement backing a counter demo against the far right demonstration this Saturday called by Stand Up To Racism and Unite Against Fascism has been signed by dozens of leading political figures including Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott and leaders of Britain’s biggest trade unions.

Concern has grown about the growth of the far right in the wake of events on 9 June and after a mosque and Sikh temple were attacked in Leeds after Robinson’s arrest in that city.

Anti-racists and anti-fascists are determined to oppose the growth of a violent far right street movement in this country. We will not allow central London to become a rallying point for the racist and fascist right.
