Brixton solidarity vigil for Manchester

Lambeth National Union of Teachers, Loughborough Progressive Mosque Finsbury Park RMT, Victoria line Aslef, Lambeth Unison, Lambeth GMB, Lambeth College UCU and Unison called a joint vigil with South London Stand Up to Racism in Brixton Windrush Square yesterday.

It was to show solidarity with family and friends of those who died in Manchester attack and to unite together to stop the racist dividing us. Chuka Umunna, prospective Parliamentary candidate for Streatham with representatives of various trade unions and other organisations spoke of why they were uniting and not to blame the Muslim community.  Around 70 people attended the vigil and passers-by signed messages of support on wallpaper and a large poster which will be sent to the Mayor of Manchester.

Later on 55 people attended a public meeting organised by South London Stand Up to Racism on Keep Racism out of the Election. Speakers spoke against the rising Islaomopbia, the need to safeguard the rights of EU nationals and about the need to build support locally against those trying to divide us on the basis of race.

The meeting committed itself to more organisation of street stalls in South London in the coming weeks during the election.
