Stand Up To Racism’s Calais Winter Appeal is taking place at a key political moment. Thousands of refugees across Europe could freeze this winter in border camps because of the inadequate response of governments such as our own.
European governments are preparing to invest millions of euros into the Greece/Turkey border to further fortify fortress Europe. This is no solution to the refugee crisis and does not address the plight of people currently living in appalling conditions in camps such as the so called “Jungle” in Calais.
Solidarity with Calais refugees
It is critical we build the biggest possible networks to pressure the government to let refugees in this winter and oppose the racist backlash being directed at refugees and Muslims following the Paris attacks. We encourage everyone to wear a ‘Refugee Welcome Here’ badge, collect money for our Calais winter appeal, and raise support for SUTR in union branches or campaigns.
SUTR groups are calling for a week of solidarity with refugees in Calais in the run-up to the next delegation. On 3 December people are asked to do workplace, university or college collections. The weekend 5-6 December is a weekend of action where individuals or groups can collect in local areas. Please also support refugee fundraising events that have been set up by SUTR groups.

Anyone who wishes to join the delegation should book a Eurotunnel or Ferry service to get them in France for around midday (France is an hour ahead). You can come on either Saturday 12 or Sunday 13 with cash donations. The aim on Sunday 13 is bring together trade unionists, refugee organisations and politicians to highlight the appalling conditions in the camp.
Directions
From the tunnel, head toward Calais and follow all the signs toward the port/ferry. Look for exit 2 called ‘Z.I. des dunes/Oye-Plage’ which is an industrial estate. Once you exit, you can see the jungle on your right. Park on one of the several side roads off ‘rua de Garennes’ lock your vehicle and walk over to the camp where you will meet the rest of the delegation.
