Jeremy Corbyn MP joined Diane Abbott MP and Stand Up To Racism campaigners on Saturday at the Calais refugee camp. We saw squalid conditions that no human being should be living in. We also saw incredible resourcefulness of people with nothing building schools, restaurants and other communal areas. We heard harrowing accounts from refugees who are facing a freezing winter, assaults by the police and attacks by fascists. Stand Up To Racism activists also took part in a demonstration in Calais highlighting refugee rights, which was part of a Europe-wide day of protest which included events in Greece and other European cities. Jeremy Corbyn MP, Labour Party Leader, said: “These conditions are a disgrace anywhere. We as human beings have to reach out to fellow human beings.” Diane Abbott MP said: “Conditions are even more appalling than I thought – it’s so important to fight to end the inhumane way these refugees are being treated. Come to the demonstration on 19th – we all have to come together and make our voices heard and stand up against racism.”

The visit comes in the week that a court made a groundbreaking ruling that three children and an adult in Calais should be brought to Britain and united with their families. However, the French Prime Minister has also rounded on refugees this week, invoking fortress Europe by saying they pose a threat to the very concept of Europe.

This makes standing up for refugees all the more important!

The UN Anti-Racism Day demonstration on Sat 19 March is an opportunity for thousands of people to come together and put pressure on our government to help refugees instead of allowing a humanitarian crisis to continue unfolding on our doorstep. Stand Up To Racism led the 100,000 strong ‘Refugees Welcome Here’ demonstration last September and previous UN Anti-Racism Day demonstrations in 2014 and 2015, some of the biggest anti-racist mobilisations in decades.  Let’s make this the biggest one yet!
