MODEL MOTION: SUPPORT 16 MARCH ANTI-RACISM DEMO & 23 FEB SUTR TRADE UNION CONFERENCE

This branch/committee/ organisation notes
• The alarming rise of racism, Islamophobia and anti-semitism and far right forces across Europe, America and elsewhere.
• The rise of a far right street movement here in Britain around the “Football Lads” and Tommy Robinson centred on targeting Muslims, with Ukip giving open encouragement and support to this movement.
• The ‘hostile environment’ created by the government to scapegoating migrants and refugees and attack Muslims with its Prevent Agenda, provides fuel for the Far Right to grow.
• That in late December 2018 and early January 2019 we have seen an escalation of the scapegoating by the Tories as they highlight tiny numbers of refugees crossing the English Channel in boats.
• That the workplace also remains a ‘hostile environment’ for many BAME workers.

We believe
• That we must combat all attempts to divide and rule ordinary people.
• It’s not migrants and refugees who undermine wages and public services – its cuts and austerity.
• Racism has no place in the workplace and unions must be at the forefront of challenging it.

We resolve
• To support the 16 March 2019 Anti-Racism demonstration organised by Stand Up To Racism and the TUC to coincide with the annual UN Anti-Racism Day. To contribute £_ towards transport costs to the demonstration. To publicise this among our members and send our union banner. • To support the Stand Up to Racism Trade Union Conference on 23 February 2019 in London. To pay £ for _ tickets and transport costs.
• To affiliate to Stand Up to Racism. Annual affiliation rates (please circle): Local trade union branch/campaign: £50 • Regional: £200
