Following inflammatory statements by Nigel Farage linking sexual assaults with immigration, we call on the Electoral Commission to investigate Farage.

His comments earlier this week implied sexual assaults on women could be a consequence of a remain vote in the EU referendum, describing it as a “nuclear bomb”.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby condemned this saying Farage was “guilty of inexcusable pandering to to people’s worries and prejudices, that is giving legitimisation to racism”. In an open letter Shami Chakrabarti, Doreen Lawrence and Sayeeda Warsi said “Veiled threats of sexual assault by a new immigrant community stray to close for comfort to the race hate laws.” The letter also called for Farage to apologise. As he failed to do so he should be excluded from public debate on the EU referendum.

Such comments have no place in a free and fair democracy. We call for an informed and balanced debate on the EU referendum, instead of fear mongering. We say racism out of the referendum.
