#TakeTheKnee: Friday 11 September

The trial hearing of the four ex police officers charged with the murder of George Floyd starts tomorrow, Friday 11 September.

On that day the judge is to hear whether those accused of George Floyd’s killing will be tried collectively or as individuals.

Stand Up To Racism is asking all those who are supporting the fight for justice to #TakeTheKnee – on that day – in solidarity with George Floyd and to oppose racist policing in Britain.

The day of action, tomorrow on the day the trial begins, Friday 11 September, will see safely socially distanced protests across Britain where anti racists will come together to #TakeTheKnee in an act of solidarity, defiance against institutionalised racism, and demanding justice. This will include a protest targeting the US Embassy in London.

The inspiring #BlackLivesMatter movement developed across the world in the wake of George Floyd’s killing. The issue of racist policing is at the heart of that movement.

Stand Up To Racism co convenor Weyman Bennett said

We stand with those facing racist harassment and violence at police hands. In Britain the massively disproportionate use of use of stop and search under section 60 against black people must end.

“We face a crossroads in fighting racism and discrimination that has killed thousands who are disproportionately killed by police in our communities, and are disproportionately affected in Covid19 deaths due to institutionalised racism.

“This is not a moment, this is a movement. No more black people killed by the police, No more inequality justified by racist lies. No more divide and rule by the rich and powerful who use racism as a tool to defend inequality in society. We need change and we need it now, in fact we demand it.”
