Stand Up to Racism challenges racist UKIP election launch

Stand Up To Racism activists protested at Ukip’s general election launch in London this morning because we are outraged at the party’s racism and scapegoating . We are not prepared to be silent while Ukip cynically and deliberately whips up racism.

Naima Omar, a student from south London, who took part in the protest, said, “Ukip wants to scapegoat Muslims for the real problems in society. They don’t want people to look at the real issues in the general election. How dare Ukip tell Muslim women what to wear, and to threaten us?”

Naima was bundled out of the room for making her views known.
Weyman Bennett, co-convenor of Stand Up To Racism, who was on the protest, added, “Ukip has decided to target votes by saying it will slash immigration and target Muslims. It cannot be allowed to get away with these attacks without protest.

“Ukip has selected Anne Marie Waters to be its candidate in Lewisham East She is deputy leader of the UK arm of the anti-Islam Pegida movement, who has also praised Marine Le Pen. She has described Islam as ‘evil’.

“We have launched a campaign to keep racism out of the election—wherever it comes from. Ukip is a racist party and we will continue to campaign against it.”

Stand Up To Racism is a national campaigning organisation supported by major trade unions, faith and community groups. They annually organise a national march against racism which this March mobilised over 30,000 people.
