As fascist “Tommy Robinson” (real name Stephen Yaxley Lennon) announces tonight that he will be standing in the upcoming Euro Elections that run between 23 to 26 May, Stand Up To Racism is launching a major campaign to stop him and to ‘Keep Racism Out of the Election’.
Robinson was a member of the fascist British National Party (BNP), and he founded the fascist English Defence League (EDL). He marched with neo-Nazis in Poland who chanted Antisemitic slogans, and he has become the figurehead of a new and dangerous far right street movement here in Britain, with fascist forces operating within it and pushing virulent Islamophobia as the sharp end of the wedge to normalise racism, scapegoating and division.
Robinson is also due to be facing trial on contempt of court charges on 14 May.
Weyman Bennett, co convenor of Stand Up To Racism, said:
“‘Tommy Robinson’, or his real name Stephen Yaxley, has been terrorising the Muslim and black communities up-and-down the country.
“He was a supporter of the Nazi BNP and he now wants to take the seat that Nick Griffin once had to carry on the tradition that gave us the Holocaust that killed millions. This would be a tragedy if a fascist and Islamophobic criminal was able to gain the legitimacy of a seat.
“We have to have to as a matter of extreme urgency unite together to stop this.”
Sabby Dhalu, co convenor Stand Up To Racism, said:
“Stephen Yaxley-Lennon is using the Euro elections as a platform to promote racism and Islamophobia.
“During these difficult times with the country divided over Brexit, we call on the people of the North West to reject this toxic politics of hate and use their vote to stop him getting elected as an MEP.”
