As the US Election takes place, Donald Trump has already signalled he will refuse to accept the result if he loses. The strong likelihood of armed fascist and racist organisations on the streets supporting Trump and his ever more racist rhetoric means now is a critical time for solidarity with the US Black Lives Matter movement. Any victory for Trump victory will further embolden racists.

Trump’s handling of the pandemic means that over 200,000 people in the US have lost their lives, with over 8 million confirmed cases meaning the US has the highest death toll in the West. Despite catching the virus, Trump is not willing to take necessary measures to halt the spread and save lives.

We have already seen unrest in the city of Philadelphia following the police shooting of 27-year-old Walter Wallace Jr, after his family had called for medical assistance when he was having a mental health crisis on Monday. The Black Lives Matter movement is the biggest political movement in US history, with polls estimating 16-25 million attending demonstrations, unprecedented support amongst the US population. Trump has unleashed the state against the Black Lives Matter movement and given open support to the far right – telling the Proud Boys to ‘stand by’.

The whipping up of racism and scapegoating of refugees is used to distract from the disastrous handling of the virus, which in turn leads to refugees including children dying in the Channel as we have seen in recent days.

Whatever the result, on 4 November join us outside the US embassy to offer our solidarity to the Black Lives Matter movement in the US.

Strictly socially distanced event – wear masks, avoid public transport, do not come if you are unwell or in a vulnerable category.
