Last night’s ‘Back off Boris: No to Islamophobia’ protest brought together members of the Muslim community, trade unionists and anti-racists to express the widespread outrage at Boris Johnson’s disgusting and racist comments about the burka.
The demonstration reflected that fury at his comments and how they have dangerously given confidence to the far right, but it also reflected the beautifully diverse, multicultural and united communities we live in.
A small number of far right racists stood across the road, showing clearly the shameful role Boris Johnson has played in normalising Islamophobic racism, and in giving dangerous far right forces confidence to spout their disgusting divisive and deeply racist hate.

But the Back Off Boris: No to Islamophobia protest wasn’t phased, and drowned out their vile racism with much louder chants of “There are many many more of us than you, we are Black, white, Asian and we’re Jews”, and “Her Body Her Choice”.
